Stalwarts’ legacy betrayed

Solidarity: Amina Cachalia would have supported the small farmers’ battle.

Amina Cachalia, my mother, would have turned 90 on June 28. What would she have made of the country she so loved and devoted her life to?

I went on a march last week with hundreds of small black sugar growers from KwaZuluNatal who were protesting against the dumping of imported sugar that is affecting their livelihoods in an industry that is only beginning to transform from the days of tight white control of the British colonists.

The story of sugar touches on aspects that would have been close to my mother’s heart.

To quote Grethe Koen writing in City Press in 2015: “SA’s sugar history was born out of rampant colonialism, indentured labour and massive profit.”

The Coolie Law No 14 of 1859 enabled the colony to import Indian workers on contract.

Indenture was different from slavery. Workers received food and board and a small monthly stipend in return for their labour. They would also receive crown land and citizenship after five years. They laboured from sunrise to sunset, six days a week, and reports of the curtailment of rations and wages and severe ill treatment were common.

Koen writes: “In 1891, Act No 25 withdrew the original promise of land and citizenship. Only 51 Indians received crown land from the colony. AntiIndian legislation had intensified as SA became increasingly segregated, and the act was to discourage permanent Indian settlement…. By 1888 Indians had to carry passes, and could not own land, vote or live outside designated areas.”

My mother was inducted into political struggle in Durban, having followed her elder sister, Zainab, to the city. Zainab was participating in the Passive Resistance Campaign and was sentenced to six months in jail. Passive resistance was supported by the descendants of the indentured labourers. From then on, Amina’s life was dedicated to the struggle for the freedom of all SA’s people.

The trials and tribulations of the indentured workers Amina and Zainab’s father had railed against, alongside Mahatma Gandhi, who was secretary of the British Indian Association, were an important part of her induction into politics. Amina’s father-in-law, Ahmed Mohammed Cachalia, was chairman of the association at the turn of the past century, and Amina’s father, Ebrahim Asvat, succeeded him.

Amina was born into a family of struggle stalwarts and the political legacy continues.

More than 150 years later, sugar workers and small growers are still taking to the streets. They are making inroads to transform a hidebound industry.

It is a metaphor for the lack of general transformation and the inability of the very government Amina proudly helped shoehorn to victory, to deliver on the aspirations of the most needy. It also shoots a shot across the bows of Julius Malema’s and the EFF’s most recent repugnant utterances about Indians. Amina would have found this appalling.

What would she have made of the issues the sugar workers and fledgling owners were protesting against? While she would have had empathy for their demands, what would she have made of their call for protectionist tariffs in an era of a Trumpian return to mercantilism, protectionism and tariffs?

She would have had deep compassion for the sugar workers and farmers in their struggle to establish a foothold in an industry that denied them fair access. She would have stood in support of their freedom. And while she would have baulked at the protectionist rhetoric, she would have called for fairness in a world engulfed in tit-for-tat protectionism. She would have demanded that they were granted the chance to succeed. This is what Amina stood for.

In her memoir, When Hope and History Rhyme, she muses fondly about important men in her life: my late father, Yusuf Cachalia, and Nelson Mandela: “Memories of the past flood through me, oh so often: memories of Yusuf and his wise counsel at crucial times. In his last interview with Business Day, a few months before Yusuf died, he warned South Africans to guard against absolute power and greed. ‘It’s so easy to slide down a slippery slope’, he said.

“Looking back over the decades, I feel I am blessed to have had men like Yusuf and Nelson in my life, loving, guiding and inspiring me. Yusuf is gone but his wise and loving nature remains with me. Nelson is only a phone call away and I pray that it will remain so for a long time.”

All three have since died. Madiba would have been 100 years old now, Yusuf 103 and Amina 90. Their struggle and sacrifice, with many others, helped deliver the freedom of 1994. I think they would be horrified by the corruption, patronage and still parlous state of people such as the black and Indian sugar workers and farmers about 25 years after delivering on a lifetime’s endeavour.

They would have called for a change in the course of history. One can only hope that their wishes be granted, and that successive generations seek to ensure this.

સુધ્ધ અને ટાજી હૂરટી ભાસાની હુવાસ

સંસ્કારનગરી વડોદરાના વૈષ્ણવજન મીતકુમારે યુવાનીના ઉંબરે પગરણ માંડયાં. કન્યાઓ જોવાનું શરૂ કર્યું. બેટર ચોઈસ અને વાઈડ સિલેક્શન માટે એમણે 'ડક્સીન ગુજરાટ'ના સુરત શહેર તરફ નજર દોડાવી, કુંડળી મેચ થઈ.

પરિવારો અનુકૂળ હતા એટલે મીતકુમાર કન્યાને સુરત જોવા જવા નીકળ્યા.

સરનામું કતારગામ રોડનું હતું. પણ રિક્સાવાળાને 'ટ્રનેક' વાર સમજાવ્યું ત્યારે એ બોલ્યો, "એમ કેવ ની ટારે કે કટાળગામ ળોડ પર જવું છ." છેવટે રિક્સાવાળાએ બરાબર 'થેકાને' પહોંચાડ્યા.

ભાવિ સસરાની એક જ શરત હતી, "પોયરો કાંડા-લહણ ખાટોની જોઈએ."

એટલે મીતકુમારે પોતે કાંદા લસણ ખાય છે એ છુપાવવાનું હતું.

ભાવિ સસરાના ઘરે ડોરબેલ વગાડતાં બારણાના જાળિયાનું તાળું ખોલી જમાઈને આવકારવામાં આવ્યા. સસરા તાડુક્યા "બાન્ને ટાલું મારી ડે. ભિખારી અંડર ઘૂસી આવે ચ. બીજા ભિખારી ની આવી જાય."

આવા સન્માન પછી સસરાએ ઘરનોકરને કહ્યું, "હોફા હાફ કર ની ટો જમાઈરાજન બઢી હૂરટની ઢૂલ લાગી જહે."

હોફા હાફ થિયો એટલે જમાઈએ પૂંઠ ટેકવી.

સસરાએ કિચન તરફ જોઈ બૂમ પાડી,

"ઈંડુ ટૈયાર છે?"

મીતકુમાર હચમચી ગયા.

વાત તો થઈ હતી કે કાંદા લસણનો બાધ છે અને આ લોકો સવારની પહોરમાં ઇંડુ પીરસવાની વાત કરતા હતા.

મીતકુમારને થયું કે સસરા એની પરીક્ષા લઈ રહ્યા છે. એટલે મીતકુમાર બને તેટલી શાંતિથી બોલ્યા, "ઈંડું મને પસંદ નથી. એક્ચ્યુઅલી અમારા આખા પરિવારમાં કોઈને ઇંડું ન ચાલે!

સસરા 'અકરાયા', "અરે! ઇંડુ પસંડ ની મલે તો હું કામ હૂરટ હુઢી લામ્બા ઠિયા?" આ સંવાદ સાંભળી સાસુજી બહાર ઘસી આવ્યાં,

"ફોતો ને કુન્દલી જોઈને ના ની પાળી ડેવાય? આ રીટે અમારા પળિવાળની ફજેટી કળવાની?"

મીતકુમારને સમજાયું નહીં કે સવારની પહોરમાં ઇંડુ ખાવાની ના પાડવાથી કોઈ પરિવારની ફજેતી કેવી રીતે થાય! છતાં મીતકુમાર બોલ્યા,"સોરી!"

સસરા હજુ ગુસ્સામાં હતા, "તમારી સોળીની હું અમારે હોળી કરવાની? ગ્નાટીના મેરામાં અમે કેયું કે અમને 'મીટ' ચાલહે તો ટમારાં મમ્મી પપ્પાએ બી કેયું કે અમારે 'ઇંડુ' ચાલહે, પછી હવે હેના પલટી મારો!"

બે વૈષ્ણવ વેવાઈએ વચ્ચે એગ અને મટન ચાલે એવો સંવાદ થાય એ મીતકુમારની અલ્પબુદ્ધિ માટે કલ્પના બહારનું હતું. સસરાએ હાથ જોડયા, "ઇંડુ તૈયાર છે હવે જોઈ ટો લેવ!"

મીતકુમારને થયું કે ઇંડુ ખાવામાં બાધ છે, જોવામાં નથી. એટલે હકારસૂચક હા પાડી. સસરાને 'શાન'ના શાકાલની જેમ 'ત્રન ટાલી' પાડી એટલે એક સુંદર કન્યા ટ્રે લઈ આવી.

ટ્રેની અંદરનો ખાદ્ય પદાર્થ જોતાં મીતકુમારને થયું કે ઇંડા લંબગોળને બદલે ગોળ કેમ છે?

ત્યાં જ સાસુ બોલ્યાં, "મોં મીથું કરો!"

ચોંક્યા, 'સ્વીટ એગ્સ?'

સૂગ કરતાં ક્યુરિયોસિટી વધી જતાં મીતકુમારે એ ગોળાકાર 'ઇંડા'ને પકડી સૂંઘી જોયું.

સસરાએ ખુલાસો કર્યો, "રસગુલ્લા છે."

બોલ્યા, "તમે તો ઈંડુ ઇંડુ કરતાં હતા ને!"

સાસુએ કહ્યું, "ટે આ રેઈ અમારી ઇંડુ ઉર્ફે ઇંડ્રાવટી, ટમે જેને નિહારવા આવ્યા ટે ટમારી હામ્મે ઊભી!"

મીતકુમારે આદુંવટી અને ઘનવટી જોઈ હતી પણ ઇંડ્રાવટી પહેલી વાર જોઈ. એ ઇંદ્રાવતીના રૂપના પ્રકાશમાં એક સાથે બધી ટયુબલાઇટ ઝબકી.

સસરાજી 'ઇંડુ તૈયાર છે?' નહીં પણ 'ઇન્દુ તૈયાર છે?' એમ પૂછતા હતા. અને પોતે એમ કહ્યું કે અમારા પરિવારમાં 'ઇંડુ' ન ચાલે ત્યારે આ હૂરટીઓ 'ઇન્દુ' ન ચાલે એમ સમજ્યા હતા અને સસરા અમને 'મીટ' ચાલહે એમ કહીને 'મીત પસંદ છે' એવું કહેવું હતું!

કેટરિના અને દીપિકાને હંફાવે એવી ઇન્દુને જોઈને અને આ સ્પષ્ટતા થતાં મીતકુમારનો શ્વાસ હેઠો બેઠો. ત્યાં જ સસરાજી બોલ્યા, "તમારા શાળા ટુસાર સાળામાં ભનાવવા ગિયા છે, સીકસક છે. એ આવી જાય એટલે ચીકનપૂરી ખાઈ લઈએ."

મીતકુમારે ચીકનપૂરી નામની વાનગી લંચમાં ખાવાની કલ્પના નહોતી કરી. પણ ના કેવી રીતે પાડવી? એ તો શીખંડપૂરી પીરસાયાં ત્યારે જ ખબર પડી કે વાનગી પ્રાણીજન્ય હતી પણ વર્જ્ય નહોતી.

અંટે મીટે કહી ડીઢુ કે મને ઈંડુ પસંડ છે.

Terrorism is not due to religion, locate the underlying politics!

Labeling any act of violence in the name of religion is a trend which picked up in the wake of 9/11 twin tower tragedy. There’s a need to look at the construction of perceptions more than before now

Politics in contemporary times is wearing the clothes of religion; much too often. It may be global politics of imperialist countries, to control the oil wealth, or the politics to re-impose values of birth based inequality in South Asian countries, religion is the cover.

In Pakistan and many West Asian countries, it in the name of Islam that feudalism-authoritarianism persists and is being strengthened, in Myanmar-Sri Lanka Buddhism is the cover, while in India, it is the label of Hinduism, which is being abused to stifle the values of equality and liberalism. Too often such acts of sectarian politics affect creative people, their gazal concerts are disrupted, their films are banned-attacked by the storm troopers. Many a times warnings are given to them and apologies sought for the hurt feelings of religion or nationalism.

Priyanka Chopra, the star from Bollywood who has been doing a serial on US television, Quantico, has been in the news for similar reasons (June 2018). In one episode of this series; the character played by her thwarts the nuclear attack by some Hindu-Indian terrorist, in the nick of time when an Indo-Pakistan summit is set to take place. The hurt sentiment brigade announced “Hindu Sena appeals to public in general to boycott any work, ads or movies of Priyanka Chopra and appeals to the Indian government to strip her of her Indian citizenship and deny her entry into India.” In an over-bending attitude the actor tweeted “I’m extremely saddened and sorry that some sentiments have been hurt by a recent episode of Quantico. That was not and would never be my intention. I sincerely apologize. I’m a proud Indian and that will never change,” One actor from film industry Pooja Bhat did firmly stand with Chopra, defending her right of freedom as an actor.

What is in continuation with this pattern is that while in current times the films, serials, acts of fiction abound with Muslim characters as terrorists-extremists, this episode of Quantico, showing a Hindu character in the evil role brought forth the usual threats and demanded the cancellation of citizenship of the actor! One must say that labeling any act of violence in the name of religion is a trend which has picked up in the wake of 9/11 twin tower tragedy.

While the terrorist groups were groomed, indoctrinated by the superpower US, to join the military fight against Soviet Russia’s occupation of Afghanistan, the whole exercise of indoctrination was done by using a version of Islam prevalent in Saudi Arabia. The master of the planning was sitting in Washington. The whole act of insane terrorism was done in the name of Islam. The US media came to coin the phrase ‘Islamic terrorism’ and religion and terrorism got associated for the first time, despite the fact the people from many religions have been involved in the acts of terror most of the time.

It was in continuation with this trend that when India witnessed the involvement of number of Hindu nationalists in the acts of terror, the word, Hindu terror, saffron terror or Hindutva terror started floating in the air. Apologies were demanded for use of this term in the wake of granting bail to the likes of Pragya Thakur or Aseemanand.

In the aftermath of Malegaon blast of 2008, the meticulous investigation of Hemant Karkare, the Maharashtra ATS chief, brought forth the fact that the motor cycle used for the blast was owned by Sadhvi Pragya Thakur, an associate of different Hinutdva organisations. With his investigation, hoards of Hindu names cropped up. This led the trail to Lt. Col. Prasad Purohit, Major Upadhaya, Swami Dayanand and Swami Aseemanand among many others who were part of Hindu nationalist organisations, some owing allegiance to RSS directly. The investigation did lead to arrest of many of them; two of them, RSS ex Pracharaks have been convicted for life term in case of Ajmer blast.

While in current times the films, serials, acts of fiction abound with Muslim characters as terrorists-extremists, this episode of Quantico, showing a Hindu character in the evil role brought forth the usual threats and demanded the cancellation of citizenship of the actor!

The likes of Sadhvi Pragya, Purohit and Assemanand have been let off on bail. Swami had confessed and given the details of planning of terror acts in presence of a Magistrate and lot of material was recovered from the lap top of Swami Dayanand Pande. One Sunil Joshi, who was also alleged to be part of the team, was murdered and it was presumed that he was murdered for making sexual advances to Sadhvi Pragya. Despite these investigations, due to change of the Government at Centre (2014), the likes of Sadhvi and Swami have got bail! Whether the truth will ever be upheld and honored is the question. What also remains unanswered is that Rohini Salian, who was the public prosecutor in the cases involving Sadhvi etc. was asked to go soft on the cases with the change of Government at the centre. It does raise many questions related to crime and punishment. In Mumbai blast (1993) cases, one Rubina Memon was given life imprisonment as the car used for blast cases was registered in her name. In Malegaon blast, Sadhvi owned the motorcycle used for blasts but was given the bail!

In present times, things are much worse as during last few years the number of Hindus involved in lynching in the name of cow has gone up immensely, funds are collected for the family of Shambhulal Regar, the brutal killer of Afrazul, in the name of love Jihad! The linkages of killers of Prof Kalburgi and Gauri Lankesh to Hindutva organisations are coming forth.

While the actors of the stature of Chopra can wriggle out to save their careers and films with an apology, there is a need to look at the construction of perceptions more than before now, as religion has been dragged in the murky world of politics all round.
