My first friend
And the best and the last too
Other friendships sometimes include selfishness,
If not that, at least a tiny bit of expectation.
Then a scratch, a crack …
Forgiving generously is one thing,
But a patch and a scab remain.
Friendship between husband and wife is ideal, but rare.
The skin that is one’s ego cannot be removed easily.
A slight touch of nail
May cause bleeding.
But if the married life melts into
Such pleasures as experienced
In the rhythmic push of a swing, in chewing a paan,
In someone’s touch on your shoulder, in the stare of a child,
In sitting in a balcony..
That will be so satisfying.
But the smell of perspiration can never be compared.
A mother can be loved like the vastness of the skies,
Can be worshipped like a deity.
But she thinks, nor expects any such thing.
The smell of milk on our lips,
The smell of our urine in her lap,
She takes them with her when she meets God.
And He turns them into fragrance.
After all, even God has a mother.

મા મારી પહેલી મિત્ર
અને શ્રેષ્ઠ અને છેલ્લી પણ.

બીજી મિત્રતાઓમાં કદીક સ્વાર્થ,
તે નહીં તો અપેક્ષાનું બારીક કણું આવી જાય.
પછી ઉઝરડો, તિરાડ …
ઉદારતાથી ક્ષમા કરીએ એ વાત જુદી,
પણ થીંગડું અને ભીંગડું રહી જાય.

પતિ-પત્નીની મૈત્રી આદર્શ પણ વિરલ.
હું-પદની ત્વચા એમ શાની ઝટ ઊખડે?
નખ જરા અડી જાય,
લોહીની ધાર થાય.
હિંડોળાની ઠેસમાં, પાનના બીડામાં,
ખભે મુકાતા હાથમાં, બાળકો પ્રત્યેની મીટમાં,
નેજવાની છાજલીમાં
દામ્પત્ય ઓગળે અને મૈત્રી મહોરે તો ભયોભયો,
પણ પરસેવાની ગંધ જુદી તે જુદી જ.

માને તો આકાશ જેટલું ચાહી શકાય,
દેવમૂર્તિની જેમ પૂજી શકાય,
અને એ પાછું એવું કશું વિચારે-ઇચ્છે
કે માગે નહીં!

આપણા હોઠો પરની દૂધિયા ગંધ
એની છાતીમાં અકબંધ.
એના ખોળામાંની
આપણા પેશાબની ગંધ
એ સાથે લઈને જ જાય ઈશ્વર પાસે!
અને ઈશ્વર સુગંધ સુગંધ!
ભગવાનની યે મા તો હશે જ ને?
