This is my village of nineteen years ઓગણીસ વર્ષ માટે આ મારું ગામ હતું
That’s the entire span of my life. કારણ મારું આયુષ્ય એટલું હતું.

I worked on these fields મેં આ ખેતરોમાં કામ કર્યું
I milked the buffaloes ભેંસો દોહી
I did the household chores ઘરકામ કર્યું
I went to school શાળામાં ગઈ
I studied till Class III. ત્રણ ચોપડી ભણી.
If your asked the neighbours પાડોશીઓને જો તમે પૂછો
They would probably say તે કદાચ કહેશે
She was a simple, homely girl સીધીસાદી, ઘરેલું છોકરી હતી એ
She worked the fields ખેતરમાં કામ કરતી
Cooked for her family એના પરિવાર માટે રસોઈ બનાવતી
They would say. એવું કહેત એ લોકો.
I did what a village girl does ગામડાંની છોકરી કરે એ કર્યું
I was what a village girl was ગામડાંની છોકરી હોય એવી હતી

I was no one હું કોઈ ખાસ નહોતી
I was like anybody else. બીજાં બધાં જેવી હતી.
This is where I spent મારા જીવનનો અંતિમ દિવસ
The last day of my life મેં અહીં ગાળ્યો
This is a hospital bed. આ હૉસ્પિટલનો ખાટલો છે.
I was paralysed મને લકવા થઈ ગયો હતો
My spine was broken. મારી કરોડરજ્જુ ભાંગી ગયેલી.
On my deathbed મરણપથારીએથી મેં
I told my sister-in-law મારી ભાભીને કહેલું
To tell Ma માને કહેજો
That I will return home soon હું જલ્દી ઘેર પાછી આવીશ.
But you know that I won’t. પણ તમે જાણો છો હું નહીં આવું.
