આક્રમક અને ભગવાકરણની રાજકીય – સાંસ્કૃિતક ઊથલપાથલ ભારતમાં થઈ રહી છે. એનો ચિતાર અરુંધતી રોય પોતાની નવલમાં − The Ministry of Utmost Happinessમાં સરસ રીતે રજૂ કરે છે. કાશ્મીરમાં જે થઈ રહ્યું છે અને ‘એન્કાઉન્ટર્સ’[encounters]માં જે વરવાં રાજકારણનું રૂપ દેખાઈ રહ્યું છે એને ખૂલું પાડવામાં અરુંધતી રોયે અજબગજબની ભાષા અને શૈલી વાપરી છે, તેમ જ પાત્રોનો ય ઢગલો એમણે સર્જ્યો છે. અમુક વખતે વાંચતાં કંટાળો પણ આવે, પરંતુ ધ્યાન-મનન-પૂર્વક વાંચતાં ઘટનાની સચ્ચાઈનો અને લેખિકાની અનુભૂિતનો ખ્યાલ આવે છે. એનો પુરાવો કાશ્મીરમાં બની ગયેલી એક ઘટનાના સમાચારમાંથી મળે છે. લેખિકા લખે છે :
“Is this the Azadi (freedom) we are fighting for that we have begun lynching people ? What shall we do with such Azadi”, asked an aggrieved relative of Mohammed Ayub Pandith, a Deputy Superintendent of Police who was brutally lynched by a mob outside Srinagar’s Grand Mosque (last week of June).
The incident has shaken the very core of the Kashmir Valley, a region that has for ever remained controversial and rife with violence. After decades of hatred, unshakeable hostility, aggressive movements from jihadis, and separatists, resistance from the locals, and reported Army atrocities, it took a police officer’s life for Kashmir to finally take a break, and a good look at itself.
અરુંધતી રોયની નવલકથા ઘણી જ વિચારપ્રેરક રહી; અને કલમની તાકાતનો ક્યાસ આપતી રહી.
