એવું રખે માનતા કે –
ખેતરો કેવળ સીમમાં રહે છે
ખેતરો આવે છે વાડામાં, ખળામાં
ફળિયાં વીંધી પ્રવેશે છે પડસાળે-ઓરડે
કોઠારે કોઠીએ ઓળખ તાજી કરતાં
ફરી વળે છે ઘરમાં, ઘટમાં ખેતરો
ખેતરો બોલે છે મન ખોલે છે
તગતગે છે આંખોમાં આખેઆખાં …
શાંત અને શાણા દેખાતાં મોસમી-
ખેતરો માથું ઊંચકે છે
જંગે ચડે છે આકાશે અડે છે
પવન કહે તો માની જાય છે પળમાં
આંબા મહુડાના છાંયડા પી પીને
માટીની મોજ ગાય છે ખેતરો
આકરી બપોરના
બેપનાહ તડકા માટે
ખોળો પાથરતાં ખેતરો
ઉદાસ સાંજને લઈ લે છે આગોશમાં …
પ્રવાસમાં માઈલો સુધી
હાથ ફેલાવી બોલાવતાં, કુંવારી-
સગર્ભા નારીના નમણા ચહેરા જેવાં
કાચી તૂરી સુગંધભર્યા ખેતરો
ધુમ્મસનું મલમલ ઓઢી
ચાંદની થઈને તમારા
ઘરની બારી સુધી આવી જાય છે
તમે સૂંઘ્યા છે કદી ખેતરોને
ખરેખરી ખાતરીપૂર્વક હેતથી?!
કેવાં તો એકલવાયાં હોય છે એ…
ક્યારેક રઘવાટમાં કે ભૂલથી
શહેરની ભૂખાળવી સરહદ સુધી
આવતાં તો આવી જાય છે –
આ ભલાં ભોળાં માવતર ખેતરો
મકાઈને બદલે મકાનો ઊગતાં જોઈને
હબકી જાય છે બિચારાં બાપડાં
સિમેન્ટના સકંજામાંથી છૂટવા-
પાછાં વળવા વલવલતાં સિસકતાં
ધધકતાં ખેતરો
કદીય માફ નથી કરવાનાં આપણને
ફ્લેટમાં કેદ થઈ ગયેલાં આપણાં ખેતરો…

Dare you believe –
fields are confined to farmlands;
Fields arrive in backyards;
Penetrating patios, they enter the rooms;
overwhelm the house
renewing their relationship with
the urns in the granary;
Fields speak
open their hearts
glow in eyes in their totality…
Placid and prudent
the seasonal fields
raise head
wage wars and touch skies;
Become courteous, in a moment, on wind's request;
Sipping the shadows of oaks and ashes
fields sing the bliss of soil;
Enduring the scorching noon's un-sparing sunlight
fields embrace sombre evenings with their arms …
In travel
spreading their hands over acres and acres
the calling fields
like a pregnant virgin's ethereal face
filled with un-ripened and mildly bitter scent
wearing fine foggy-muslin
and touch like a moonlight
the windows of your house;
Have you ever smelled the fields
in real righteousness with love?
Oh ! how lonely the fields are …
Seldom in haste or in slip
the kind and innocent motherly-fields
do reach the boundaries of ravenous cities;
Instead of grains, seeing
growing-buildings
poor fields get frightened
to quit the clasps of cement and mortar
and to return;
Sighing, sobbing and searing,
detained in flats,
our fields would never forgive us …
